Welcome to the John Openshaw Society

Where Houston’s Sherlockians Meet

We’re glad you’re here! The John Openshaw Society is a diverse group of Houstonians who gather regularly (both virtually and in-person) to indulge a common interest: Sherlock Holmes. Our meetings typically feature some juicy Sherlockian gossip (upcoming movies, shows, plays, books, and more), a presentation related to a Holmesian topic, a brief no-pressure online quiz, and some convivial fellowship.
Over the years our society has been featured in numerous press publications (such as the Houston Chronicle), and we’ve partnered with a number of institutions (like the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Alley Theatre, Theatre Suburbia, and others) to promote exhibitions and plays featuring Sherlock Holmes.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, we typically hold a virtual meeting every other month which follows a relatively standard agenda (including the aforementioned presentation and quiz), though we also began scheduling casual in-person gatherings in late 2021, a practice we intend to continue. Keep an eye out on our Facebook calendar and sign up for email correspondence to stay current on our upcoming events. We hope you’ll join us!
